The inherent automaticity of cardiac cells occasionally results in tissue outside the SA node discharging and depolarising the organ. This is the mechanism generating premature ectopic beats. Ectopic beats are frequently a benign finding on the ECG. However, they are occasionally associated with significant consequences for the patient.
